Aerobic Capacity Determines Habitual Walking Acceleration, Not Electromyography-Indicated Relative Effort

چکیده

Objective: Habitual walking is important for health and can be measured with accelerometry, but accelerometry does not measure physiological effort relative to capacity. We compared accelerometer-measured absolute intensity electromyography (EMG)-measured muscle activity between people low versus excellent aerobic fitness levels during their habitual walking. Methods: Forty volunteers (19 women; age 49.3 ± 17.1 years, body mass index 24.0 2.6 kg/m 2 ; peak oxygen uptake 40.3 12.5 ml/kg/min) wore EMG-shorts a hip-worn accelerometer simultaneously 11.6 2.2 hr on 1.7 1.1 days. Continuous gait bouts of at least 5-min duration were identified based acceleration mean amplitude deviation (MAD, in milli gravitational acceleration, mg) EMG amplitude, normalized maximal isometric knee extension flexion (EMG, percentage voluntary contraction EMG). Peak was treadmill strength leg press (leg max). MAD age- sex-specific groups (low-average, good, excellent) linear models. Results: During (4.1 4.1 bouts/day, 0.9 1.0 min/bout), the low-average fit participants had an approximately 28% lower (245 64.3 both good (313 68.1 mg, p < .05), same (13.1% 8.42% EMG, = .10). Absolute, mass, skeletal (but max) positively associated independent sex ( .01), there no associations EMG. Conclusions: People capacity habitually walk intensity, stimulus lower-extremity muscles similar those This should considered when measuring prescribing health.

Relative image size, not eye position, determines eye dominance switches

A recent paper examined eye dominance with the eyes in forward and eccentric gaze [Vision Res. 41 (2001) 1743]. When observers were looking to the left, the left eye tended to dominate and when they were looking to the right, the right eye tended to dominate. The authors attributed the switch in eye dominance to extra-retinal signals associated with horizontal eye position. However, when one lo...

Increased physical activity improves aerobic fitness, but not functional walking capacity, in severely obese subjects participating in a lifestyle intervention.

OBJECTIVE To determine the relationship between change in physical activity level and change in directly measured maximal aerobic fitness in severely obese subjects participating in a 1-year lifestyle intervention, and to determine whether change in 6-min walk test (6 MWT) could be used as an indicator of change in aerobic fitness. METHODS Complete data on aerobic fitness (maximal oxygen cons...

What Determines Absorptive Capacity

The paper empirically analyses the effect of R&D activities, human resource and knowledge management, and the organisation of knowledge sharing within a firm on the absorptive capacity of innovative firms. Using data from the German innovation survey we investigate how firms are able to exploit knowledge from external partners for successful innovation activities. We distinguish between three t...

Effort-o-Meter: the relationship between effort of walking and amount of walking performed

Walking is an effective method for promoting activity among sedentary groups, and people adhere to walking routines more than other, more vigorous exercise regimens [1, 2]. Slightly increasing the metabolic cost of walking could be a simple method of increasing overall physical activity in the overweight or obese. However, while increasing the energy cost per step would increase net metabolic c...

Assessment of aerobic capacity and walking economy of unilateral transfemoral amputees.

BACKGROUND Studies of the maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2max)) of transfemoral amputees have mostly used protocols that activate a relatively small muscle mass. Consequently, transfemoral amputee VO(2max) may be systematically underestimated, and the validity of these test protocols is questionable. OBJECTIVES (1) Investigate validity and reliability of a VO(2max) walking protocol and (2) compare...
